Opera Omnia 3: Let's see what you wusses can do
HELLO AND WELCOME TO MORE... Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia! Last time we checked in with our scattered heroes, Kuja was gathering an army of beasts with the desire to try and change his fate. Zidane and the other gathered heroes continue their quest to close Torsions, but resolve to try and stop Kuja along the way.
Which brings us to the present, and Chapter Three! This chapter features some new additions to the party, joining us from Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy Type-0. There's a nice little bit of Vaan at one point, and also a bunch of sudden unexpected Seifer Almasy! Not to mention the rest of the Disciplinary Committee.
Chapter Three is the Lost Kingdom Of Thronus. Given what we learned last time about how this world is conjured from a mish-mash of memories, that's an oddly specific name! What was Thronus, and why is it lost? WHO CARES, LET'S GO.
- This part of the story opens on Materia and Mog having a chat about that naughty boy Kuja. Mog reveals himself to be quite a bloodthirsty little ball of adorable mascot cuteness here. Materia ponders what Kuja is trying to do and why, even considering if there may be some good to be found within his actions; Mog responds that it doesn't matter, Kuja is An Enemy and, "must be struck down at all costs, kupo!"
Not very kawaii, buddy.
- Today's adventure sees the gang setting out to stop another Torsion, strolling along the beach and quickly encountering... Yuffie! Who immediately fails to endear herself to anyone by stealing from Hope and Zidane and then high-tailing it straight outta there. I would say her "Don't know, don't care!" attitude to what's going on seems a bit crazy, but I replayed FFVII not that long ago and actually it's pretty bang on.
They catch up to her before too long, but with a little ninja trickery she somehow manages to steal Y'shtola's staff and takes off again. The game does make the effort to transcribe her laughter as 'nyuk nyuk nyuk', though, which is exactly the kind of nod to the original translations that I know we're all here for. A+ would smile again.
The actual recruitment dialogue is also a really close mirror to her joining the party in Final Fantasy VII, which is pretty cute. It even has everyone walking away and her calling after them, before jeering to herself about how she'll always be just moments away from nabbing their ~otherworldly treasures~, hahaha. I don't think Opera Omnia would hold up if it was nothing but references and nostalgia, but stuff like this really is undeniably charming.
Zidane suggests that Yuffie should steal his heart, but she doesn't seem tempted.
(- Brief Gameplay Aside: In Opera Omnia, Yuffie has the ability to steal buffs from enemies and give them to herself, and also to throw enemy debuffs back onto the opponent. Most of the time the developers remember this little quirk and make sure to build in immunities on boss fights where these effects would be too powerful. Now and then, though, they forget! There was a recent event where an otherwise extremely difficult boss had an attack able to afflict the party with a debuff that took away 33% of a character's health each time they had a turn. But with Yuffie in your team, you could just toss it right back and finish the fight three enemy turns later.
To their credit, the devs just rolled with it. The playerbase assumed this would get 'fixed' between the original JP release and the event arriving on the Global version, but six months later we got exactly the same fight and Yuffie got her time to shine. Thank you, Great Ninja Yuffie.)
- Next up is 'The Mysterious Trio' — our introduction to Seifer, Raijin and Fujin! Opera Omnia lets us meet these three pretty early on, but it's actually quite a long time before they finally join up with our team of heroes. This is because SOMEONE has an attitude problem.
it's seifer. seifer has the attitude problem.
So Seifer sneers at Y'shtola being a 'cat-girl', and when she says she would appreciate not being referred to as such he gets snippy about her taking a lofty tone with him. BECAUSE HE'S FUCKING SEIFER. Raijin and Fujin suggests that maybe it would be worth asking the hero crew about where they are and what's going on, but Seifer basically calls everyone mindless sheeple and instigates a fight because of course he does.
-
I mean, I'm not gonna be the one to tell you that Squall/Seifer is real, but hey man. I'm just putting this here.
- FIGHTS OCCUR. Initially Seifer has Raijin and Fujin fight, then has a go himself. Naturally though, the heroes eventually prevail.
I have no idea why this is so hilarious to me but it really is. The combination of poor Raijin totally being ready to have a chat and the weirdly specific 'STOP ENGAGING THEM' just cracks me up. But (taking into account that I don't actually remember the answer to this question) there is a bit of an implication here that Seifer might have some sort of reason for his antagonism beyond the obvious being seifer. Stick a pin in this for now!
- That being said, the rest of the cast do have a few little chats about Seifer and co. after this point, with a lot of references to how he doesn't seem like a bad person really. I think this is kind of interesting because he hasn't really done anything to particularly warrant a generous reading of his personality? Which suggests that the aura he tries to project is perhaps not as stalwart and confident as he thinks it is. Tifa specifically says it felt like he was trying to put on an act, while Cecil says he seemed overwhelmed and thus turned to anger.
Vaan, god BLESS him, says he doesn't want Seifer to join them because he's too grumpy. I love you Vaan.
- Next up the party encounter Edge! Who initially attacks them under the impression that they're manikins, which absolutely correlates with
rionaleonhart's suggestion that the manikins are indeed supposed to be perfect illusions. FREAKY FANFICTION IS BACK ON THE TABLE, BABY.
Edge isn't a character I feel especially strongly about, but he does bring something interesting to the story here. He and Cecil don't know each other at all! This makes sense in Cecil's case, as he's still in his Dark Knight persona. However, this isn't simply a case of Edge not recognising Cecil because of the armour. Cecil specifically introduces himself, and Edge identifies him by reputation—'the Dark Knight of Baron, the leader of the Red Wings'. Part of why I wanted to revisit the story like this was to try and track which characters have which memories from which points, so this is really nice to have confirmed in such plain text! It also suggests that this Edge hasn't lost his parents and his kingdom yet (or more likely, doesn't remember it), so... that's something for him to not look forward to I guess.
At any rate, though, the party defeat him, explain things to him, and he joins the ever expanding crew!
- NOW HERE'S A PART WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING. Next scene opens on Seifer and company again, except this time he's harrassing Final Fantasy X's Yuna. Seifer is aggressively trying to get her to come with him, despite her apparent reluctance, and when the Mog Crew show up he instigates another fight.
Specifically, though, Seifer says that 'This time, I'll make it as a knight... I have to...'
THERE'S SO MUCH IN THIS. First of all, this suggests that Seifer is coming from a point in Final Fantasy VIII canon where he perceives himself as already trying and failing to become a knight. Is he post-game? You'd like to think he'd be a bit more chilled out if that were the case, but it's not impossible. Is he from some point just before Time Compression, with the belief that he has finally exhausted his usefulness to Sorceress Ultimecia? Or somewhere earlier than that, where Sorceress Edea has grown weary of his shortcomings?
For another alternative entirely, this still could be a very early game Seifer—one who equates success as a SeeD candidate with the success of his Romantic Dream (tm). WHO KNOWS. I'm not so sure Opera Omnia ever gives a concrete answer to this. Regardless, though, it is incredible that he apparently takes one look at Yuna and sees this as his big chance.
Seifer would be a terrible Guardian on account of his awful temper, but who knows? Maybe it would actually be the making of him. Jecht really seemed to mature over the course of that sombre journey; perhaps Seifer would be the same by the end. You have to wonder how he would cope with being a knight destined to stand aside when it comes time for his Summoner to die. In that sense, I think he'd kind of leap at the chance to become the Final Aeon. It would be one final ultimate way to forever remain in the service of the person he's sworn to protect. An eternal knight.
Crossover where Seifer becomes the Final Aeon—Odin, the Summoner's Knight.
Regardless, the Disciplinary Committee are once again defeated, and once again retreat before listening to anything anyone has to say. Yuna explains that she met Seifer and had no choice but to refuse his insistence that she follow them. I wonder why :o! I would have thought that even Seifer's difficult company would have been better than wandering a strange land all alone. Though I suppose, as a Summoner, she's never truly alone, is she.
- Yuna joins the team and away we go again! BUT WE'RE STILL NOT DONE WITH SEIFER. The next scene picks back up with the trio. Raijin and Fujin think that maybe it would have been worth trying to talk to the heroes, but Seifer says he's already in a bad mood and doesn't want to hear it >:( Then he calls Yuna a "frail creature" and reaffirms that she needs a knight to protect her. Best way to do this is to go on ahead of the Mog Crew and deal with the monsters/torsions themselves. LET'S GO, LESBIANS
And that's exactly what they proceed to do! We pick up again with Zidane and company finding the area ahead clear, with Seifer proudly boasting that it's already been taken care of. Of course, when Cecil extends his thanks the whole conversation quickly devolves into another showdown. Vaan asks why Fujin and Raijin don't try to stop him ("You're his friends, aren't you?"), but they just say they can't let him fight his enemies alone. This is very true to canon, where we all know that Raijin and Fujin are Good Kids All The Time. Bless them.
Upon defeat Seifer once again retreats, but this time Raijin adorably tells the party they'll "see ya around, you know?" and gets a "HUSH" from Fujin for his trouble. GOOD KIDS, DAMN IT.
- After this we get a completely unrelated but kind of excellent conversation between Vaan and Yuffie about what thievery means to them. Vaan says he didn't steal any the nice jewellery he has, but that "the treasures [were] taken from my people by the empire. I just took it back."
Yuffie is ALL about this. She explains how the Shinra overpowered her country, and that she's not a thief but a ninja that's looking to take back what the Shinra stole from her homeland. I really love this interaction and the way the two of them immediately relate to each other, and it's this stuff that really makes Opera Omnia worthwhile to me. It just highlights these little commonalities between characters and draws connections that I wouldn't necessarily have made myself. When the writing for this game works, it really works.
Speaking of...
- At this point we meet King from Type-0, and I'm gonna breeze over this a little bit because I'm not familiar with the canon. King tries to highlight that Rem is unwell, and she takes him aside and asks him to keep it to himself. King eludes to a character who would look after her if only he were here—from what I've gathered in later story chapters, this is probably Machina? BUT WE WON'T BE MEETING HIM FOR A LONG LONG TIME YET.
But honestly, I remember King making a strong impression on me when he was introduced here, and I feel like it's a shame that he isn't utilised much outside of these first few conversations. He has some dialogue about learning how to fight for the sake of war, not to protect people—he says he isn't worthy of a noble cause like saving the world. Combined with the conversation he and Rem share about the nature of Orience—specifically the horror they both feel that if someone dies in this world they might still remember them—it seems pretty clear that Type-0 is heckin' effed up.
I figure I'll get around to playing it some day! I am still pretty leery of anything with Hajime Tabata at the helm, but I found things to enjoy in Final Fantasy XV, and I think there's fair reason to believe I'd have a similar experience with Type-0 as well. SOME DAY.
- Regardless, Team Mog fight a Malboro and then the chapter ends! That's it! I mean, right before the torsion closes it spits Bartz out, and he cheerfully joins the hero squad, but otherwise it really is as abrupt as all that. This is probably for the best, though, because this entry feels a lot longer than the others. I keep saying I'm only going to highlight the interesting character moments rather than trying to summarise the whole story, and then I more-or-less hit it all beat by beat anyways, oop.

it's seifer. seifer has the attitude problem.

Delightful. I love him.
The Seifer-as-Yuna's-guardian scenario you lay out is fascinating and I really want that fic.
Fucking kill him, Cloud.
Smiled pretty hard at this. I loved that exchange.
These entries got me back into playing Opera Omnia, after escaping it for a year or so. Whoops! I've been working through Act 2 and very much enjoying everyone suddenly having to deal with a bunch of traumatic memories.

I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE PLAYING AGAIN. Or rather, I'm glad you're enjoying it! This is the part where I want to ask you one million questions about how you're finding it, what you've been pulling for, what do you make of Lufenia, et cetera et cetera, but I am going to be reasonable and resist.
However, you should for sure add me! My friend unit is Setzer because I am hopelessly devoted to aesthetic over actually being useful and he best suits what I have written on my profile. I will be of great value to you. My ID is 836 235 817!

Throw it out into fandom anyway! I'll delete my Guardian Squall fic right now if I have to. (Disclaimer: this may be a bluff.) (Also, thank you!)
wh-what's a Lufenia
My team is Squall, Rem and Lightning at the moment, but Lightning's spot has cycled through a few other characters in the past: Zell, Yuna, Rinoa, Noctis. I usually just focus on those characters when pulling. When I first went 'hm, Gargant's entries have got me thinking about this game again, let's open it up,' it turned out that there was a draw that featured both Squall and Lightning! I got very excited and spent all my gems on it.
I've added you! If you can't spot me in your followers, my ID is 438 976 185. My friend unit will shock and amaze you.

BUT ANYWAY, mobile gaming! Lufenia is the highest level of difficulty, and they are horrible and nasty and they kill me A Lot (but sometimes I win!). They're pretty much restricted to events and hard mode, though, so hopefully you will be safe from their horrible wrath. And it sounds like you play using your favs instead of chasing after whichever characters are currently considered the best, which is the correct and only way to play and you should be proud of the path you have chosen.
I've definitely become the kind of person who looks ahead to see which characters are coming up soon and plan my pulls accordingly, but it's all in aid of pulling for my best boys and girls. Sometimes this makes it difficult (or impossible) to clear the toughest game levels, but I have the emotional victory of knowing my party has great sexiness and cuteness and nothing is more important than that. That being said, I think Zell is getting updated soon! ... and I just went to check and "soon" is in September apparently, oops. If you did have any interest in upcoming banners, this site is really simple and clear imo!
I'll add you back when I log in! (It is Squall? It's Squall. We both know it's Squall.)
no subject
I'd also like to hear who your best boys and girls are!
I have the emotional victory of knowing my party has great sexiness and cuteness and nothing is more important than that.
Correct. Screw you, 'there are projectile and melee and magic characters and it helps to have a balance' mechanic; I can fill my entire party with close-range physical fighters if I want to.
no subject
NO I CAN NOT, if I say too much publically then I become 1000% less likely to actually ever commit to writing it! ... But I will say that I have a 'Loss Of Sight' square on my Bad Things Happen Bingo and I'm not afraid to use it.
As for best boys and girls.... see, this is where I've caught myself out a little. I talk a big game about playing with favourites (which I do! and so should we all!), but I've also been picking away at DFFOO for a good few years now and when you've been at it long enough you just start building up all kinds of random characters because it seems fun in the moment, or because they'll match a party aesthetic, or because they might be helpful someday, or-- and oops, did you just say they'll be helpful? Too late, sucker, you're officially playing with "the best" instead of your favs, into the gutter with you.
I play with a lot of characters these days! Most of them I... y'know, I like 'em. I like 'em fine. But maybe it's been too long since I was running parties solely built only from absolute favs. Like, you're fine, Sephiroth, but do I actually care for you much? I have nothing against you, Terra, but do you capture my heart the way Celes does?
The day I started using Kefka was the day I knew I had fallen to a dark side. Perfectly good character but dang I've never liked him, and yet here I am. Relying on his debuffs. What Have I Become. I'M HAVING A CRISIS NOW, RIONA. YOU MADE ME HAVE A CRISIS.
BEST BOYS AND GIRLS. Speaking from my early experiences playing the game, I'm always going to have a special DFFOO soft spot for Setzer and Garnet. They did a lot for me in the early days of my account, and I still love to use them even though they're both considered out-of-date at the moment. Another character (who I will talk about more in the next DFFOO update) is, surprisingly, the Onion Knight! I really like his personality in this game, and he was the very first character I ever got an EX weapon for. So now I always try to keep him built up and ready to rock. He's earned his spot many times over.
Having just opened my game up to have a look, my current team appears to be... Porom, Seifer and Sephiroth. That's honestly a pretty disgraceful showing on my part, in terms of playing with favs. I am disgusted with myself.
