Opera Omnia 4: I can barely feel my nose!
KEPT YOU WAITING, HUH
Fancied doing an Opera Omnia post, so here we go! Last time out we covered Act 1 Chapter 3, in which Seifer ran around posturing a lot and actually legitimately not that much else happened. But things are going to be a bit spicier this time, as we come face-to-face with some Final Fantasy VI! And I am going to try and keep this more focused on interesting moments rather than regaling y'all with every detail of every single moment.
LET'S DO THIS THING. Chapter 4 is called Snowy Peaks of Crudelis, and features new characters from Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy XII.
- Unsurprisingly, we join our heroes on the side of a cold and snowy mountain. It isn't too long before they enter into combat against some Magitek Armour, and one of them stands out as seeming different from the others... and sure enough, when the battle ends Terra falls from the machine to collapse in the snow. She has "something on her head", of course referring to the Slave Crown she's wearing at the beginning of Final Fantasy VI. Looks like history's repeating up in here.
The party resolve to take her somewhere safe until she regains consciousness and recovers from her wounds.
- A slight diversion can occur around here, at the player's discretion. Mog identifies that an ally may be near by, and after some prompting he says it's a girl with blonde braids. Vaan is pretty sure he knows exactly who that is! Zidane instantly jumps to ~~is she your girlfriend~, but Vaan surprisingly isn't baited and simply says they grew up together and he can't leave her alone out here.
Sure enough, it's Penelo! I don't want to say this is the best thing that happens in this chapter, but Penelo is a good girl and I will accept no slander of her or Vaan in this journal space. Zidane still isn't done trying to bait Vaan, but...
Zidane
All right, let's do this! [to Penelo] Unlike some bozo I know, I can actually protect you.
Vaan
Huh? Are you talking about me?
Zidane
*Sigh* It's just no fun when they're this dense.
... it's a fruitless endeavour.
- Returning to the main plot element, the heroes speculate about who could have been controlling their unknown assailant and why they would do such a thing. Interestingly, Yuffie kind of calls the Warrior of Light out here! Before they realised the truth of the situation Warrior of Light warns Zidane not to approach an enemy, despite the fact that said enemy is unconscious in the snow. Yuffie points out that the Warrior of Light is being awful kind now, when before he'd been willing to abandon her to her fate just because she's an enemy.
Edge interrupts with some asinine crap about how a girl this cute would never be doing anything evil, and I mentally checked out.
- When Terra wakes up, she remembers everything that happened and is surprised the heroes helped her after she attacked them. She explains that she encountered a powerful magic user from her own world—Kefka, of course—and she found herself unable to defeat him alone. Hence the Slave Crown, alas. So, enemy identified! Terra says Kefka can't be allowed to keep on doing evil clown stuff, and the heroes say she won't have to face him alone this time. Onward!
- After some wandering around, it is indeed Kefka time. Kefka says some stuff about coming to reclaim his toy, infuriating pretty much everyone present because heroes be heroes baybee. He says they can keep Terra if they prove they're strong enough, and thus battle! But upon defeat, Kefka laughs about how Terra is wasting time making friends. When she was with him she was an unstoppable killing machine, apparently, "toppling bodies left and right". Is he referring to other warriors with the light?! Kefka scoffs at the dumb term and and bails without giving a straight answer, leaving Terra mortified to learn she may have done awful things under his influence.
- Here we have a weird interlude where the party is attacked by Yang, who is... apparently being controlled, influenced by whispers of evil telling him to fight? A sound thrashing sets him back on the straight and narrow, but I don't think it's ever really clarified what was going on here. If it's meant to be Kefka, they're strangely reticent about just outright stating so—and there's no Slave Crown here to clarify that possible connection. WHATEVER, Yang joins the crew. Note that he and Cecil recognise each other! So Dark Knight Cecil is from early in Final Fantasy IV, but he has at least started his journey.
Of course, Edge does not know Yang. That tracks, since he doesn't remember Cecil yet either.
- The party ends up chasing Kefka into a Torsion, while Mog says some sketchy stuff about "Kefka, just how much do you know?" -- extremely sus, moogle mascot. Regardless, my Final Fantasy IX bias comes into play now, because the heroes have a conversation about how warriors of the light are able to close torsions but other folks are capable of opening them. Mog says their powers are related, but not the same.
Kefka can open torsions, and we've seen that Kuja can as well. At which point Zidane makes my heart grow three sizes by wondering if maybe they might be able to coax torsion makers into joining their side. I love Final Fantasy IX you guys. I love Zidane and Kuja's weird relationship, and I love how post-game they are in Opera Omnia. BUT MUCH MORE ABOUT THIS IS THE FUTURE.
- Out of the torsion our heroes go, and straight into the arms of... the Onion Knight, protagonist and representative of Final Fantasy III! FFIII is a game I've never played, and 'Onion Knight' is even more of a silly placeholder name than Warrior of Light is, so I was pretty sceptical of having much fondness for ole OK when he was introduced. But I actually really like Onion Knight as he's portrayed in Opera Omnia! Quite a bit of emphasis is placed on him being younger than most of the other characters, but he's got a very thorough and thoughtful personality. He's also kinda cynical and suspicious, which is a fun trait to have in one of the early FF protagonists!
Right away here, the heroes offer to join forces with him and he says he's got things to take care of first and he'll get back to them on their suggestion. What a ratbag! Get back here! Though soon enough he reappears, checking in to make sure the other heroes haven't come to harm. Sazh comments that OK isn't a bad little man after all, hahaha.
When questioned about why he's out here fighting if he doesn't know what's going on, OK says that's why he's fighting. He's trying to find answers and learn the truth of what's going on here.
- Onion Knight
Let's say I don't completely believe you yet. Can I still tag along?
They say yes, of course.
Onion Knight
All right, I'll go with you. I feel like there's so much I can learn from being with you all.
Bartz
You know, you really overthink things for a kid.
Onion Knight
And you really don't think things through enough for an adult.
Bartz
You arrogant little─
I love this cynical little shit, hahaha.
- Onion Knight chats to Terra, and I think he becomes the first character to outright say what's been strongly between the lines up to this point—maybe Mog shouldn't be taken at face value. Terra says she knows she needs to put a stop to Kefka and that's reason for her to travel with the other heroes, and OK says he's grateful that she made her own decision rather than simply going along simply on faith of Mog's good word.
I remember being quite pleasantly surprised by this conversation happening here. It's pretty obvious that something is going on with Mog, but I didn't expect the characters to be picking up on it so soon!
- ANYWAY, MORE KEFKA COMBAT, he once again escapes to go and cause more destruction and Onion Knight persuades everyone not to blindly chase after him. It's clear the enemy has a greater understanding of the situation than they do. They can't afford to rush into anything.... and that's pretty much how this chapter ends!
This is arguably a more plotty chapter than the last one, but I think it's a lot less fun all in all. There's something just endlessly entertaining about Seifer and company, I guess! Regardless, though, next chapter includes the introduction of Laguna (which is exciting!), and Maester Seymour (which is seymour), and a few others as well. For now, though...
CHARACTERS INTRODUCED: Terra, Penelo, Kefka, Yang, Onion Knight
*italicised characters not recruited/playable
p.s. I live in Canada now! I've been here for... almost a month?! Almost a month already. My god.

It's so good! Opera Omnia really reminded me of how interesting those two are.
I love 'Terra says Kefka can't be allowed to keep on doing evil clown stuff'.
I still really enjoy these recaps! TIME TO HAVE A BURST OF PLAYING THIS GAME AGAIN, as I do every time you make one of these posts.

Also, I had a dream with you in a few nights ago! I dreamt that Bob Odenkirk (of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul infamy) and Joss Stone (of early 2000's UK pop chart infamy) carried out a deranged suicide pact, and then I "woke up" several times, becoming more and more confused about whether it had really happened or not. The dream ended with me and you taking a walk together, while I tried to explain my ongoing 'unreality' situation. You were sympathetic but ultimately bemused. THANK YOU, DREAM RIONA.
