"What's this? Were you thinking to bully my bouncing baby Blackened Wilbur?"

Been back home to my little Cornish town for the first time in over two years! Pandemic has been difficult in this regard, particularly since I don't drive. Travelling for over five hours on public transit is something we had to think about very very carefully before committing, and we've actually cancelled two home visits over the last few years just because the situation didn't feel stable enough.

But now I've been back! I've seen my mother and father and siblings for the first time since leaving the hospital in 2019! I mean, technically mother came to stay with us that first week out from the hospital just to provide a bit of extra support, but that was the last time I saw her and it had been even longer for everyone else. It's been such a long time since I could meaningfully enjoy their company, and it was just so good to be with everyone and see how they're getting along. I met my step-sister's baby for the first time (fourteen months old), and met a childhood friend's new baby as well (three weeks old!), and [personal profile] shinsengumi finally got to meet Nelson the fluffiest dog in the world and I am so glad. It has been so overdue and I am so glad.

I adore my niece and nephew. I do not doubt that most aunt/uncle folks feel very similarly, but man. I adore those kids, and I hate being so far away from them all the time. On the other hand, it does allow me to maintain a constant status of Cool Fun Present-Giving Aunt in a way that would probably be much trickier with regular exposure. Not to mention a great deal more expensive.

Completely unrelated to any of that, I have been thinking about doing a series of journal posts about........ Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia! OpeOmni (i made this nickname up and will continue to use it, shush) is a turn-based mobile game combining the vast casts of different Final Fantasy games into one fractious and unstable world. It actually has well over 100 characters in it at this point, meaning there's a genuinely huge array of different FF people capable of interacting with one another.

And, surprisingly, the writing is... decent? There are times where I feel as though the characters don't quite read the way I would imagine them to in their native games, but there are also times where I love the choices this game has made. And some of those choices have been genuinely brave! Some of these casts have come from after the end points of their original games, and are now having to live with the knowledge that when they return home, not all of them are going to be there. And there have been cases where some party members have more memories than others—Squall seems to come from further along in his own timeline than Zell does, for example. He also seems to realise what his relationship to Laguna is, but the Laguna in OpeOmni is still a young man and has no idea what his future holds.

And there's other stuff like that as well. Machina knows how Type: Zero ends, but no one else remembers—right up until they suddenly do, and all hell breaks loose. Sephiroth makes some weird insinuations at Aeris and she basically calls him a fucking weirdo and it's great. Ignis knows a lot more than Noctis or Prompto, but feigns otherwise in their company because he doesn't want them knowing about what lies ahead.

What Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia sometimes lacks in character voice, it more than makes up for with scenario and potential. And so I've been considering doing some light-hearted character-focused summary posts! I'd probably highlight cute/meaningful moments in each main story chapter and do something similar for the character side events (Lost Chapters), likely in chronological order. There's a decent chance I'll end up doing this regardless just because I'd enjoy having the references, but if that sounds even remotely interesting then let me know and I shall be incentivised!

I would love to read these Opera Omnia posts! I fell out of the habit of playing somewhere in the middle of Act 2, but I enjoyed what I did play; there are some great little interactions (and the choice of including post-game Machina made him so much more interesting than I found him in the original Type-0).

I'm also really glad you were able to have a good visit with your family. This entry made me smile.
