advent calendar day 08
Today's advent calendar post at
colors_tcg asks for our experiences with OC's - original characters. Have you made any? Are they inspired by fandoms? What are they like? Tell us about them!
WELL DO I HAVE ANY ORIGINAL CHARACTERS? YES I DO. Such that I have decided to just go ahead and type a post for this rather than trying to limit myself to a single comment. THIS IS REALLY FOR MY OWN AMUSEMENT I AM JUST A SILLY PERSON OKAY ANYWAY HERE WE GO, since there are eight random cards up for grabs from doing this I am going to limit this down to talking about eight different characters.
We could be here forever as it is, so I'm probably going to try and limit myself to a few hundred words per person. Where they came from, where they are now, and then a little of who they are, focus depending somewhat from person to person. For a simple bit of background, though, all of these characters are being RP at
eternalwar. They are either part of 'offensive' country, 'defensive' country, or they are some sort of neutral party. They all have a particular power! It is a very satisfying and well-considered setting, shush, we're here for the characters not the world-building proper okay.
Larsen
• Larsen is from offensive country, and was born to a very traditionalist household highly devoted to the monarchy and all it presides over. His upbringing was loving and comfortable, but certainly very rigid and defined. Larsen has a very absolute view of the world, and very absolute loyalty to the royal family, and these are both things that were infused into him by his immediate family.
Larsen also has a younger brother named Kol! They have always been close. Kol has the power to heal but only at the expense of his own health - consider it something like pouring his own life energy into another person. He'll recover later, but it doesn't do his already frail health any favours. Larsen spends a good deal of time worrying about Kol for this reason among several others :(
• Larsen is currently employed by His Majesty as a recruiter for the war effort. This is really more like conscription, and Larsen will use whatever force necessary to drag people in and hand them over to the army for appropriate deployment. Arguably this makes Larsen a pretty bad person, and I'm absolutely sure it's made him extremely unpopular with a lot of innocent civilians who've subsequently forced to the front line of battle. Larsen doesn't really lose sleep over this, though. He is acting by direct order of the king, and that is all the justification he needs. Like I said, very absolute definitions of loyalty and morality. And I would say loyalty overrides morality in this case - or rather, His Majesty decides what is and isn't morally acceptable. Larsen is not here to make friends >:[
• CURRENTLY: Larsen is about to discover that Coleson, his five-year-old nephew, has accidentally killed his caretaker and been living unprotected for the past several days. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ANYONE CAN BE BORN WITH ANY POWER, but anyway. That is what Larsen gets to deal with next in his life, getting Kol to address this in any capacity. Also flipping out in the most stoical rigid manner possible when Helene volunteers to take over as Coleson's primary caretaker.
• So let's talk about Helene! Helene is a spymaster. Helene is a woman who knows her own mind, knows her own needs, and isn't shy about staying true to either of these things. Helene was once intimately involved with the king - or so the rumours say. It is even whispered that she declined a marriage proposal from him (surely not, though!). Whatever the case, Helene is not someone Larsen is comfortable dealing with and that is because he is absolutely head-over-heels madly in love with her and always has been. DEAR REPRESSED MAN, REFUSING TO STAY IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE OBJECT OF YOUR ETERNAL ADMIRATION IS NOT HOW WE DEAL WITH THINGS you are a grown man you are close to forty years old stop it.
Larsen loves Helene. He admires her, he respects her, he trusts her intentions and her judgement and he will stand to hear no one speak ill of her. She hardly needs him to get protective of her, and especially since he's so stupidly abrupt and retreating in her presence, but. He is Larsen this is all he knows :|
• Stoicism will win the day. Also his power is sensory deprivation, since I didn't mention that anywhere else. He can steal your sensessss, at least for a few hours.
Riane
• THAT WAS WAY MORE THAN A FEW HUNDRED WORDS LET'S TRY TO LIMIT THIS. Riane is a neutral party in this here war. More honestly, Riane is a great supporter of this war! She doesn't care a great deal about the eventual outcome, she just wants to make sure it stays a long long way away. Riane is a tradeswoman of considerable means, and there is just ever so much profit to be had from warfare, you see? And why would she want to compromise her glorious lifestyle and countless financial assets for something as wearisome as peace?
• CURRENTLY: Riane and her husband, Tsing, are currently causing subtle indirect chaos in defensive capital and laying the blame across the border. Because heaven forbid animosities settle too much, after all. They are rather wicked selfish people but hey, it's not like they much care what you think.
• So, Tsing. Tsing is Riane's husband. He can read minds! And does so habitually, much to Riane's public and private displeasure. Or no, that isn't true, she finds it incredibly amusing for the most part. But Tsing has long since stopped reading her thoughts and has told her such, but she doesn't believe him. What guarantee can he possibly give her? And why would he give up such an opportunity? Riane is very prone to mistrust, possibly because she's an almost habitual liar herself. There is very little she wouldn't promise, and very little she wouldn't immediately defy if she thought she could get away with it. She knows this about herself, so naturally she has to apply that same willingness to commit treachery onto everyone surrounding her. That, she says, is just basic good sense. (Riane would laugh at me outright for saying this of her, but it's so much safer not to trust anyone. Just so much less room for disappointment that way. Understand, Tsing, darling? She can't trust you because she values you too much to risk being disappointed by you. See that convoluted logic of affection there? No?)
• Riane is one of my newest characters, so I'm still learning about her right now. What I do know, though, is that she's pretty fundamentally damaged in regards to how she deals with people. Always deflects, never willing to broach personal topics with any level of sincerity or honesty, ahhh. She's difficult. But happy, enough. Glad with her comforts, loves playing with all the pieces that comprise her life, enjoys the man she's allowed to be her husband. I suppose only time will tell as to how any of this finally settles for her.
• Riane's power is to put people to sleep, incidentally \o
Aubrey
• THIS IS STILL GOING TOO LONG I WANT TO FINISH THIS SOMETIME EVER SO. Aubrey! Aubrey is a pacifist. He is the grumpiest little pacifist you will ever see, and he has zero respect for humanity, but nonetheless he is absolutely a pacifist. Aubrey's power more or less allows him to communicate with animals, and he lives a very solitary life in the wilderness causing as little impact as possible and trying to stay as far away from humans as he can. He's not quite a vegetarian, but he's certainly all about sustainability and taking only what you need, respecting the world around you. He is friends with a fox! That is Aubrey and his life, haha. Or it was.
• CURRENTLY: WELL. I say he lives this solitary life but recently a terrible disaster took place near Aubrey's current location and he happened upon the only survivor - a regenerating amnesiac named Kieran. After some rocky introductions and lots of bristling on nonsocial Aubrey's part, he decided to look after Kieran and help him find his way toward wherever he came from. Alas, only shortly after this, the two were picked up by offensive army seeking answers as to what caused prior mentioned disaster.
So currently Aubrey is in a dungeon in the heart of offensive capital city, utterly dejected and utterly furious and hating humanity more than ever. And worst of all, he's absolutely convinced that whatever neglectful treatment he's receiving, things must be going ten times worse for defenseless Kieran, still weak of limb and blind to even the loosest expectations of what their captors might inflict upon them. AUBREY ISN'T IN A GOOD PLACE RIGHT NOW.
• But enough of that, Aubrey is basically a darling in a completely surly way. Terse, inarticulate, suspicious as heck, but he won't resort to violence and he'll always choose to flee if given the chance. Maybe things went poorly for Kieran, but Aubrey really had nothing to do with that. If they'd been left alone Kieran would have had a crash course in valuing all life equally and maintaining the utmost respect for the land and the creatures inhabiting it. A life of peace, if only they could be left to such. Alas, poor boys...
Lisette
• Lisette, second child and first daughter of a noble defensive family sadly in financial decline. Lisette has grown up with all the privilege engendered in having the right name, but only the illusion of wealth that by rights should accompany her prestige. Her parents are elderly, infirm and in slow mental decline, and her older brother is a complete wild card. Cabel's power essentially grants him limitless energy - he doesn't eat, he doesn't sleep. Unsurprisingly this causes him great discomfort! Cabel disappears for months and occasionally years at a time, finding it unbearable to remain in one place for too long. This leaves Lisette with the singular sorry task of trying to placate her parents concerns and find a solution to their family situation. But why is she trying so hard? Doesn't she recognise the simple answer, and how there has never been a more perfect time for it?
• CURRENTLY: Lisette is engaged. Because why bother letting a perfectly capable woman find an answer when you can just MARRY HER OFF AND REAP THE REWARDS, RIGHT? Which isn't at all to say that her parents don't love and respect her, they are doing what is considered normal and proper and they really do not understand her dissatisfaction at all. But fact is, Lisette is dissatisfied. She will have none of wretched Lord Astor, that vile cold-blooded toad, and certainly she will never forgive them for trading her away like some once-cherished heirloom. Curses on the whole rioting lot of them >:(
• Lisette is a bit of a misandrist, I'm afraid. At best men are useless and ineffectual and hold entirely too much command over perfectly able women. At worst they are words we will not repeat here. Either way Lisette is bisexual but shut up she wants nothing to do with worthless mens she will stay with her best friend lady friend Ystelle forever and no one will take that away grr >:( Lisette has a lot of angry faces.
• Lisette has the power to alter your perception of her, positively or negatively. It's affected by proximity and isn't permanent, so she can't exert any lasting influence over a person. But so long as you're within the right range and her attention is focused on you... well, you still maintain your own personality, but at the very least you won't be doing anything Lisette doesn't want you too. It might not save her from a wedding, but it can at least keep her safe from the inevitable honeymoon night... (spoilers: to be fair, Astor wouldn't force that issue anyway, but SHUT UP ASTOR THIS ISN'T ABOUT YOU)
Siegfried
• Sieg! Sieg grew up beside the sea, relatively happy I suppose. I mean, if you ignore the blinding debilitating migraines that could floor him for days at a time. In all seriousness though, Sieg's childhood was pretty rough on account of his illness but he did have a comfortable home life and a family who care for him deeply. Lucky you, Sieg.
Sieg's power gives him prophetic visions, albeit rather cryptic intangible ones (ain't that always the way?). Sieg also suffers hideous migraines. The two always come together, but no one really knows if the visions cause the migraines or if he has to be in that sort of deliriously pained state to be able to have visions in the first place. If he hadn't actually managed to decipher some of them and genuinely predict some things, chances are they'd be written off as mere delusions brought on by the pain. (Hell, he believes that some of them are that, and he doesn't know how to tell which ones are which. But he's not sharing that information with anyone. He perceives himself as useless enough already, he doesn't want anyone else second-guessing what little meagre use he has.)
Early in his teens Sieg moved to the capital city (offensive side), initially in the company of his father. The idea was supposed to be that they would find someone who could diagnose what exactly is wrong with him. Months and months later it became apparent that that wasn't exactly going to be - however, physicians in the capital were able to help him with the pain. Moreso, word of his power spread among the higher levels of society, and it became apparent that his continued presence in the city might be of some value. No official orders were ever given, it was never quite so serious as that, but it was ultimately settled that it would be in Sieg's best interests to remain stationed here. For the first few years his parents would visit often, or alternate which one of them would stay with him, but eventually Sieg was settled in his own right, with his own money, and that is where he lives today.
• CURRENTLY: And indeed, that is where he still is! Sieg is on good terms with his parents, although he feels he's let them down terribly just in being who he is. Sieg is, I would say, a very lonely and self-depreciating individual. He doesn't feel able to contribute anything worthwhile to society in his current state of health, and he doesn't see it improving. Most days he's physically capable, but he has no idea when the next migraine will strike - only that it will be crippling and render him utterly ineffectual. Sieg hates himself for his weakness, hates himself for not being able to repay his family, and without going too far down an entirely different avenue of issues he hates himself for his sexuality as well. Although it might be more true to say he hates himself for his own perceived lack of self-control. BUT I'M SURE NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT THAT.
• Just as a slight aside to the above, though, Sieg keeps his problems very close to his chest. Doesn't like people involved, doesn't like anyone knowing just how pathetic he is. A few people in the court are aware, a few doctors are aware, but otherwise he keeps it concealed. The only other person who knows is Xian. Sieg hates Xian. Sieg hates Xian very much, and Xian is really the only person who understands how much Sieg hates Sieg. And is very merciless about making sure that Sieg knows that he knows. Could probably get into some very circular language here, but suffice it to say that they have a pretty complicated hateful relationship and also sex happens oops. AND IT HAD ALL BEEN SO ALMOST CLASSY BEFORE NOW, THANKS GUYS. Let's move on.
• bonus! Sieg will probably die before he hits thirty. NOW ON THAT HAPPY NOTE LET'S ACTUALLY MOVE ON, AND LET'S MAKE THIS THE LAST ONE.
Kristopher
• FINALLY THEN, Kris is adorable and ridiculous and precious and dear and it's about time someone adorable made the list frankly. Kristopher is back on the defensive side of the border, and also lives in the capital city. This is largely because he was tired of his parents telling him to get a job and stop sleeping with all the boys. YES KRISTOPHER IS A VERY SERIOUS CHARACTER OKAY.
More seriously, he is a perfectly legitimate character, for all his flaws and such. He's silly in a lot of ways, but then a lot of people are silly. He's very earnest, he's fairly sincere, he's not very good at commitments and he likes for everything to be as easy as possible. He doesn't like attention, he doesn't want to be the best at anything, he just wants a comfortable easy life where he can enjoy minor successes and do as he pleases. Of course, he also gets upset when people write him off or underestimate him. He's the sort of person who intentionally fumbles and flusters through life (and let's face it, he doesn't have to try hard to create that sort of impression), but he feels offended when people take him at that face value. So...
• CURRENTLY: Lately Kristopher has been doing something almost like growing up. He's about as close as he's ever been to committing to a single person, and he's scrabbling for his own piece of accountability. He wants to pick his stance and hold to it, even if it creates the vulnerability associated with choosing incorrectly. Perhaps, in having held the stance at all, he might garner at least some respect...
• Kristopher likes cake, and he likes Drael, and he likes metal and jewellery. Those are probably his favourites things in the world. Oh, and Olivia of course. Olivia is his best friend. Metal is his power! He can manipulate metal with greatest of ease. Jewellery is pretty and lovely and he adores it, and he adores crafting it. He is almost always wearing numerous rings, broaches, bracelets, and sometimes earrings (he doesn't like necklaces much, I am not especially sure why!). It's an almost constant subconscious habit of his to rearrange his jewellery throughout the day - of everyone on this list, I think Kristopher and Aubrey are the two who use their powers mostly frequently/consistently. Drael! is! Kris's boyfriend, more or less, though you won't hear either of them say it any time soon. Commitment is hard you guys :( And cake is cake, come on. Breads and pastries are fine too.
• All of my icons at
omoikane (as well as the upcoming bright deck) are Kris's PB. THE TRUTH IS REVEALED.
Now I guess I could keep going here. I could talk about bright like sun Leonel, I could talk about all the Council's Children (or at least the one's who're mine!), I could talk about my poor offensive soldiers, I could talk about Laurence who definitely is not on a pirate ship, or I could talk about Ivy who is who only knows where. I could talk about Kin, who is rather an angel, or I could talk about D'Ivann who really only looks the part. I could talk about Rehn, who kills people, or Thane, who kills people for even worse reasons. I COULD DO THIS FOREVER. But I am not going to because it has been hours and this is ridiculous, shame on me. /rolls away, fdhjskl the end okay I am numb
